modem ports

By jehu ·
I have installed my modem on nt workstation and it keep default to com2. When I am installing it the only option is com2 mo other ports are there to select. How can I get it to give me the option of selecting ie: com3. The modem won't dial and itsays it is a port or hardware problem something of that sort. How can i test the modem to see if it will dial.

Thanks,
Jehu.

You can try to add a port by going to Start/Control Panel/Ports and clicking on the add button. Make sure that you know what the modem settings are. Once the port is added and you have rebooted, try adding the modem.

I am assuming this modem is internal. First you need to disable COM2 in the CMOS. If the modem is defaulting to COM2 you have a conflict. Is the modem PCI or ISA? If it is PCI try using another slot.

Hope this helps.

Answer 1 is probably your solution. NT does not automatically detect most hardware. Once your com port is installed and functional, NT will be able to detect and install your modem. (this can be accomplished from the modems applet in the control panel).

Try removing RAS and all your modems all together, once you have done this, instead of reinstalling ras try installing the modem first, this always seemed to work for me. the modem should now come up on com3.
