I have a Hayes 56k modem that you have to pick a phone up, for it to hear a dial tone, othrwise it will bomb on no dial tone. Its modem specific, because I moved it from one box to a another and the problem followed. Does anyone have any ideas?

Most modems use a relay and resistor to short out the line, creating a pseudo off hook condition to detect dial tone. Seems you may have a bad resistor which would not create the short and thus no dial tone.

Time for a new modem unless you can find the schematic for the modem.

Is your phone line a set of phones connected to a central control. Like we have a phone system with 6 – 7 lines on the control board and we have to dial 0 to make a call and then the number. If you have such a system then you have to go to the dial up setttings and it has a question – dial – for out going calls. So add that and try it should work. If not do let me know.
