Modem problems

by mick@work . Updated 25 years, 2 months ago

I have a P200 with 130 ram running windows 95.

It was a networked pc but i am now using it standalone as an internet pc to browse the web. it also has office 97 installed.

I initially had problems booting the machine and eventually physicallyremoved the nic, cleared the network stack and removed the internal modem in the device mgr. i then reinstalled the modem with drivers.

it now boots ok, however, each time it boots it wants to reinstalled the modem again so that it thinks it has 2 modems, one on com1 the other on com4.

There is only one modem physically installed.

when i try to remove either modem in device mgr the machine hangs.

There are no apparent conflicts in device mgr & while device mgr finds the modem & says it is working ok when i test it there is a failure.

I tried to connect to the web with ISP software but it couldn’t detect the modem either.

I’ve check it is seated ok.

Would installing win98se improve anything?

All suggestion gratefully accepted

Thanks folks
