Modem purchase

by st0rmchaser . Updated 22 years, 9 months ago

Going to hook up to Linux using a older computer. Wondering if I should go ahead and buy a hardware modem. Or use my Lucent Winmodem? I am asking because I heard Mandrake 9.2 will have driver support for this. I also would like to know sense I am putting Linux on a older computer what is the average life span of a computer? I was told to upgrade my computer as much as I can. I have a Pentium III 633 I purchased it in December 2000. The computer I have is about maxed out from the upgrades I have done so far. The RAM is at 320. (can go to 512 RAM) The processor can only go up another 54 megahertz. I really don’t understand why I was told to either sell it, or upgrade it. Will this do for Liunux or not? They said my older computer will be fried soon. Is that true?
