Modem Sharing

By boblewis ·
Has anyone got a fairly simple solution for modem sharing under WinNT4.0 SBS using a Dell poweredge 1300. What multi-port boards do you recommend? I want to use 2 perhaps 3 modems etc etc

For multiport board I'd recomend Digi (WWW.dgii.com). Depands on you needs you can get different amount of ports. As for modem sharing software I had good expirience with Winport.

If you just want to use 2 modems, you might want to consider starting with adding a standard IO card. Assuming you might use COM1 for a UPS port, you would still have three COM ports for the modems and unless you're running multiple NIC cards, you should have enough IRQs. Once your needs grew beyond three, you could then add the Digi-Board and re-use the same modems.

A couple notes: if you want to use the same lines for incoming fax and RAS, you'll need to choose one of the modems on the list at TechNet article Q244965. Support for adaptive answering is hard-coded and it's a short list; I use the Sportster 33.6 and it works great.

Also, there is a special procedure for setting up the Digi-Board; you can find it at TechNet articleQ180637.

The modem and fax sharing on SBS work pretty well.
