Modems

I heard that you can loop two modems in one PC to double the internet connection speed. I don't know if this is possible, but if it is I would like to know how. Thanks for your knowladge, and time.

Modems

by Rangers Fan In reply to Modems

Do you mean using two modems in one PC connecting on two phone lines to the internet to double the bandwidth? If that's what you mean you are referrring to a term known as "modem binding". There were a couple of hardware solutions that let you do it (I believe one made my Diamond called shotgun), and one made by microsoft (I forget what it is called). The microsoft one has it builtin support in windows 98 and 98SE (you can use two different modems with this one). The problem with this technology is that the ISP must support either of those two technologies otherwise it won't work.

It is called multi-link, and I've done it on NT4 using 2 phone lines. I don't have it set up now, but if I remember correctly you need a certain minimum level of Dial-Up-Networking and then it shows up as an option after you have 2 modems installed.

The above is correct, with the exception of ISDN which is an entirely different technology. The ISP has to support the dual-line access as BOTH calls have to hit the same router or else it won't work (at least that is my understanding. To my knowledge 1) not many ISPs support it, and 2) it is VERY expensive to implement.
