modify NIC driver in Network Client boo

By Vuitanh ·
I have 3COM 3C980B-TX. I created a Network Client boot up disk already. Since the card isn't listed on the menu. How do I manually configure so that file(s) to make it work.

This is tricky and requires lots of experience with modifying protocol.ini, and system.ini on the boot disk.
I would suggest you look into adding those drivers to the NT client boot disk creation tool. Microsoft Technet has doc #Q128800 which can walk you thru adding those new drivers to the list. With that in place, you can create the boot disk without having to modify anything.

I believe somewhere on the menu (the very top or the very bottom) there is an option to specify a manufacturers disk. If you have the 3COM 3C980B-TX drivers on a different disk, the Network Client program will prompt you for them.

The TechNet article referred to (Q128800) is very good and complete - this is the easiest way to do this. If you don't have access to Technet, you can go to support.microsoft.com/support/search to search the knowledgebase for this article, or emailme at synergy@synoffsys.com and I'd be glad to send you a copy of the article. Hope this helps!

Dittos to Answer #3. I've been doing it that way for 2 or 3 years now. It works great and you don't have to worry about losing your boot disk, you can always make a new one. I also reference Knowledge Base article # Q142857. It's the manual version of the same process.

A word of warning though: this won't always work because some NDIS drivers (DOS-mode NIC drivers), Compaq's in particular, are too big to fit on a 1.44MB floppy.

The following is from the 3Com knowledge base. You can modify it for your card. This is abridged... I cut out the stuff about creating the original disk. Just create a Disk for 3C509 and go from there...

3. SYSTEM.INI Changes:
a. Look for the following line under the [network drivers] section: netcard=elnk3.dos
b. YOU MUST CHANGE netcard=elnk3.dos TO LOOK LIKE: netcard=el90x.dos (for the 3C90X Fast EtherLink/EtherLink XL PCI family) netcard=el59x.dos (for the 3C59X Fast EtherLink/EtherLink III PCI family)
c. Sample SYSTEM.INI
[network]
filesharing=no
printsharing=no
autologon=yes ...
autostart=full
maxconnections=8

[network drivers]
netcard=elnk3.dos **** <------ CHANGE THIS LINE AS STATED ABOVE ****
transport=ndishlp.sys,*netbeui
devdir=A:\NET
LoadRMDrivers=yes
