monitor dead?

by thepubear . Updated 17 years, 10 months ago

Today I was playing a mmo, when after brushing my fingers against either the f12 or wake up button on my keyboard, my monitor (viewsonic va1912wb) for my main computer went a pale white/grey for a second and went black.

Now the computer was still working, because I was also logged in on another account on my secondary computer, and could watch the character move when i hit the arrow keys.

i messed with it for awhile, because for awhile i was convinced i’d caused some sort of bizaare sleep mode on the monitor with the keyboard. Then I plugged in the monitor in question to the dvi plug of the working secondary computer, and it did the same white/grey ghosty flashy thing(wow technical). When rebooting the computer, everytime i would normally see it post some sort of bootup screen, such as the make of the mobo that kind of stuff, i just got that funny white/grey pale/ghosty screen, and then it went black.

I finally got my primary computer working by transferring the video card and monitor from my working secondary computer. I am typing this in on that computer. 3 cheers for a video card with only dvi plugs and 2 working monitors with analog. yay!

That being said, i got 3 questions.
1) Is whether the fact that my fingers touched the wake up or f12 key on my keyboard caused the monitor to go into some sort of hibernation mode. I realize that this is probably a long shot, but one can only hope.

2) What are the odds that the video card is messed up? Since my other two monitors had the wrong kind of plugs, i really couldn’t check it.

3) Is the monitor gone bad? I’ve had it for a little over 2 years, and its probably a year older but theoretically it was a higher quality to start with, since the other 2 dell monitors i bought from a computer show, and well this is a viewsonic.

Thanks in advance for you help.
