Monitor Driver

By pmfturner ·
I have a Mitac flat screen monitor (about 4 years old ? and very expensive at the time !), Model LC53, Type MT-00-15RX-AH. Having formatted my C drive, I do not appear to have the correct driver installed for the monitor; the one that Windows 98 has installed displays only 16 colours, and 640x480 pixels; I do not appear to be able to change these settings.

On asking Mitac from where I can download the correct driver, their response was ?dear customer, sorry for this, We have no the driver can not support you. Please install the VGA driver first that can update the pixels.?

Where can I get the correct driver from or how can I change the settings for the monitor ?

On a fresh install of Windows 98, you need to install up to 4 drivers to correct your problem.

First, you need the motherboard chip-set drivers.
Critical if you have on-board or AGP graphics.
Note: Some chip-set manufactures (VIA) recommend using an older version of their driver for W98.

DirectX (from Microsoft) You want to install the "correct" version of DirectX for your specific video card.

The driver for your specific video card.
Check the installation instructions, or the readme file for which version of DirectX is required / supported.

The monitor driver. (actually seldom needed)

A good source for links to hardware manufactures driver pages is www.driverguide.com

If you have a name brand system, start at the system manufactures page.

I found this website which may be useful to you:

You may find a compatible driver.

Like the Chas said, you need the video card driver to fix this, not a driver for your monitor. YOu see, it is the video card that regulates how video is displayed to your monitor. So, if your video card is not running with the right drivers for it, then Windows won't be able to use the video card. And when that happens, you get stuck in 16 colour VGA mode like you are in.
So, what type of video card do you have? Is it an on-board video, or is it a separate card?
Find out what video card you have, then go to that website for its manufacturer, and get the right drivers for Win98 for that card.
Install them, reboot, and that should do it.
