Monitor will not come on but hdd works

By waynefranks40 ·
I have an older style computer running windows 98 and my monitor will not come on but the hdd and other drives power up. The monitor connection is on the motherboard via cable connection. I have tried pushing the cable onto the motherboard to make sure it is connected. I was wondering if the power to the motherboard itself could be faulty.I have tried the monitor on another computer and it works ok on that.

It's quite possible the onboard video is shot, try a pci video card. Should be able to pick up a used one under $10.00

If you disconnect the monitor, do you see a "No Signal" message or something on the screen?

If so, then the problem is likely to be your onboard video. You can try disabling it and installing a video card to resolve the problem (at least temporarily...when components start failing on a MB, it's generally time to replace it).

If after disconnecting it there is still no signal or change in the screen on the monitor, replace it with a known good monitor. If that works, then the fault is with the monitor itself. It could be the tube, power supplies, cable, etc...and unless it's a really great monitor, you should replace it - monitor repairs tend to cost almost as much as the replacement cost.

Good luck....hope this helps.

Yes, the power to the motherboard could be bad.
However, since the drives go through their self tests, the power supply itself is probably okay.

I recommend that you unplug and reconnect the white power supply connectors on the motherboard.
Then, remove and reseat your RAM modules.

Check and see if the CPU fan spins up when you turn the PC on.
If the CPU fan does not spin, then the CPU has likely over-heated and needs to be replaced.

Another common PC problem is that the modem has been damaged, and is locking up the data bus.

Remove the modem (and any other plug-in cards) and see if the PC boots.
