Monitoring Internet Usage Per User

By doubleg ·
My boss just asked me this morning to check on a couple of users who they "believe" is spending most of their work day on the Internet.

Is there a way I can check this on the server. I looked at our MSPLOGS and they werent very helpful.

Monitoring Internet Usage Per User

I dont think there is a easy way to do that with only proxy server.
I use surfcontrol to monitor user's internet habits like webpages, ftp, downloading, total amount on the internet, what kind of webpages they go to etc.
I can block those sites and create all kind of reports.

regards,

leopold

Goto http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/evaluation/previousversions/thirdaccesscontrol.asp

Here you will find trialware that you can use to monitor user activity on MS Proxy Server. These programs basically import the msp logs and present them ina readable format by user, department, etc...

I have used Burst Technologies and Net Tracker in the past with success.

It depends on how you have access control and logging setup in MS Proxy, If you have the Logging on, Access control enabled and user names added to the proxy ACL's then the logs will show the User name and the m\c netbios name or the m\c IP, Date Time, any site visited and the object downloaded. The log files are saved as comma separated values and can be opened in any word processor or can be imported to a spreadsheet or database (even MS Access) to make reading and searching simple. One thing to be aware of is if there is a dash instead of a user name\m\c ID it will be the URL\Object cache refreshing automatically. You have to be aware of the refresh if your are on a dial-up connection or pay on a bandwidth used basis as this can seriously rack the bill up

Hope this helps
