monitoring P2P on local network

By sccannon ·
Are there any programs that will show what files are being shared from your local network through file sharing programs? We are trying to track down a user, but since we use private addressing, we can not see that particular address going through regular file sharing programs. If we have a program that works inside of a network we could possibly see the user. Thanks for your help.

packet sniffer

You want to set up a packet sniffer on your network. Have the packet sniffer running during normal business hours putting it's data into a file. Then you can run the same packet sniffer to analyze the network traffic. Most will translate the packet types into a meaningful word rather than just display numbers. The packets for p2p software will have the ip address of the computers that are communicating using the software.

Something like Sniffer Pro (from Network Associates) is great for this. It gives more data than you could ever use, and you can filter it down to capture only the data that you need. IP addresses, MAC addresses, Machine names.
