More info on IIS 4

By Nate from RI ·
I saw an answer to a question that stated that NT4 SP6a and IIS 4 cannot co-exist. I am hoping that the author of that post could elaborate. I am running an intranet site with SP6a and IIS 4 but have had some odd behavior from it at times. Can you tell me what one can expect when running with this configuration?

I have a customer that runs an web farm of 25 servers with 6a and it has been very reliable. 6a had several fixes for memory leaks and other issues for IIS and MTX.

Server pack 6a should unstablize your IIS server. It fixes a few performance monitor problem dealing with IIS couters and also fixes a few bugs in MTS and ASP. My IIS server been running for months without problems. If you use ASP on your web server, sometimes you need to restart the IIS service or even have to reboot if you use something less than service pack 6. The reason is there seem to be a memory leakage with ASP intrinsic component of the asp.dll file. However, sp6 should fix that. The odd experience you been having is related to your software that you install on that server. Certain softwares from certain vendor aren't compatible with sp6 yet. If you continue experience odd behavior I suggest you consult your software vendor to check to see if their software supports sp6 or if there is an update for it. I hope that helps.

I am the Author of that statement. I have IIS 4.0 MS Certification but all I can offer you is my personal experience.

I have attempted to install sp6a over IIS and Vice versa. I don ont think this is a hardware problem. But If I try to Install IIS4.0 over sp6a I get about 50 exceptions during setup. If I do it the other way The setup completes normally but the server will not come up after reboot. I have worked around the problem by only installing sp5 on that particuolar server.

Hope this covers what you want to know.

Thanks for getting back to me. I haven't had any problems that severe. I think I did the service pack, then IIS.
