More than one IP address to nic card

By qultptry ·
Somewhere I read about binding more than 1 IP address to nic card. Is this true? We have WAN that must use static IP's for tracking purposes. Mobile users are forced to change IP's each time they visit another location or network segment. Can I put more than one address on a card, and if so how?

You don't give much detail about the OS and the NIC itself...

For *nix try something like this (assuming your interface is 'wan0'):

# ifconfig wan0:1 192.168.111.222 up

Verify the setup:

# ifconfig -a
# netstat -rn

For NT, open the Network control panel, go to Protocols | TCP/IP | Advanced and click on the [Add] button for the IP addresses box. From there it's easy...

If it's NT then it's easy. Simply use the advanced tab as the other user said. A couple of notes though. If you need more that 5 addresses per nic, then you must manually edit the registry.

Also, if the NIC is on MS proxy server, then your outof luck. There is a bug in v2.0 that limits you to one IP address per nic. (you can always add another nic thiough).

Thanks this works for NT, but what about 95/98?

If you're using Linux:
http://ctdp.tripod.com/os/linux/usersguide/index.html
Item 31, about halfway down describes two ways to bind multiple addresses to one card.
