Mother Board Question

James,

The application for the new PC is Printed Circuit Design software. Mentor Graphics, Allegro, PADS etc. Auto routers, and the like. These project boards can be very large 20 layers, 3500 components, high speed rules and so on. I also want to add ProE or Solid Works for the mechanical side to design rather simple brackets etc and to also model the entire assembly in 3D.

Well Bill,

As much as I personally like AMD CPU's, I know for a fact that some of the CADD companies you mention only support their software on Intel systems.

So, I would recommend that you get genuine Intel Motherboards with the latest Intel chipset.

I would recommend all the DDR RAM that the budget can handle.

Chas

I don't really see a question in there but if you are asking how to get the best performance for these applications I would start with the graphics card. Most CAD software (from what I see on the cad sites) doesn't work as well with ATI cards. The thing to avoid here are cards that are made for gaming. Currently, one of my clients (they use Autocad, Inventor, Solidworks) has been switching to the ELSA Synergy ll card with good results. They use 1.7 GB processors with 768MB RDRAM.
Good luck!Mike
