Motherboard dying?

By neognome ·
I am working on a box that the user installed a new hard drive in. Sometimes it boots clean and doesn't have any problems. Other times it doesn't even make it to the bios boot. There is a beeping sound that appears to be coming from the motherboard and it freezes. I ran diagnostics on the new drive and it shows no errors. Any suggestions?

Depending on the motherboard mfg, the number of beeps represents a specific error type. It may not be the drive at all. Often times this intermittent problem is a poor connection to memory modules or, video cards, or drive connections. A PC won't start up without memory, a graphics card, and at least one drive that's designated as a boot drive. As you might already know, it will start without a hard drive if you have a bootable floppy disk inserted and the floppy isn't disabled in the BIOS.

You might try re-seating everything that plugs in - memory, connectors on the board,(not the CPU chip) and all cards that plug into slots. If you have access to the booklet or CD that came with the motherboard (maybe a web site from the board mfg) there will be an explanation of what the number of beeps mean. Each mfg has its own methods, though.

good luck, hope this effort helps.

The beeping you hear is a failure code, and these codes are not universal, rather dependent on the brand of motherboard. If you can identify the beep code, you can narrow down the suspect. Based on your input, I'd lean toward saying your HDD is OK, but maybe a failing IDE channel (yes, bad MB).
