Motherboard or CPU?

By dinkey ·
I'm working on a Dell Inspiron M5030 laptop. When turned on it has a blank screen the only lights that come on is the power light. I hear the fan spin up then stop. Don't really hear the HDD doing anything. After on for maybe 5-10 seconds it gives me a series of beeps. 7 beeps in a row then pause for 2-3 seconds and repeat. I've reseated the memory even tried new memory, same results, took out the hdd tried another, same, took out the cmos battery, same, did the hard reset no power or battery hold down power button, same. Looked up the beep Code and saw that it says Processor Failure. So had another CPU to try got the same results after turning the Laptop on about 5-10 seconds 7 beeps. So any ideas? Thank you for your help in advance.

A Processor Failure

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Motherboard or CPU?

Doesn't mean that the CPU is dead it means that the CPU is not working. That can be a Dead CPU or some circuitry on the M'Board feeding the CPU Power or Signals not working.

You are seriously looking at a failed M'Board here and to be perfectly honest without a Schismatic things are all about close observation and looking for things that are not right.

Generally speaking it's not worth the effort pull the HDD fit to a External Enclosure and get the data off it. So in answer to your question it's the M'Board.
