Mouse behaves crazy at times

By winex ·
On my P1 233MHz system, and also on some other systesm, I noticed the mouse suddenly starts behaving errant and out of control. The situation will not be corrected until restart. It goes on opening different windows even if you try to click on start button to shutdown. Can anyone suggest any cause/remedy for this please?

If your mouse behaves erratically or skips around, you need to clean the rollers. Turn your mouse over and remove the retaining ring. Clean the ball with your ammonia and use a Q-tip swab dabbed in ammonia to clean the three rollers. If the rollers have a film on them, you can use a toothpick to gently scrape the film off.

There are plenty of practical joke viruses out there that will do this. Its also posible that you have a trojan horse. More than likely though, there is a program loading at startup that is causing this. Do a selective startup and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you need to start eliminating one thing at a time to find out which program is causing it then eliminate the program.

Start>Run>msconfig>Startup Tab...

If you don't want to play around with msconfig startup items, just boot to safe mode and see if the problem goes away. If it does you're still going to have to find the program via msconfig.

In addition to the other suggestions, it could be a bad mouse or PS/2 port.

Try a new mouse.

Keep in mind, that devices connected to a PS/2 port should NEVER be plugged in, or un-plugged with the PC on.
Doing so can damage both the mouse and the motherboard.
