Mouse Move Disconnects DSL Modem

By PuterWiz49 ·
I have an issue with my internal LAN.
Here is my equipment run-down.
1 server running 2000 Advanced Server connected to LAN for authentication and connected to DSL for internet sharing using MS Proxy version 2 with SP2. I have 3 other workstations running Win2k Professional authenticating into the server for LAN access and internet access. 1 particular machine is a Dell, and the rest are Compaq machines.
The Dell is set to power off the monitor after about 45 minutes or so. If I were to move the mouse to wake the PC, it completely disconnects me from the internet in the fact that I have to turn off the DSL modem and turn it back on again to regain access. I have tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew on the server but it will not pull a new IP address from the ISP. I have to literally shut down the DSL modem and power it back up again. Any clues as to what may be causing this issue on that Dell box?

Hi,

OK. Two answers based on the following assumptions - its not entirely clear what's what from your description...

The Dell IS the server and is connected to the DSL modem...

As the previous answer suggested check your BIOS configuration for power saver settings - although I suspect if your server was "going to sleep" then you'd lose DSL connection for the other machines in your LAN.

The thing that springs to my mind is the power surge that happens when the monitor powers back up could be spiking your DSL modem enough to make it loose connection.

Try turning off the power saving option on the monitor and resort to a dark, but perhaps not totally black, "normal" screen saver through windows.

Also you could put your DSL modem on a surge protector.

The Dell is one of the clients for ICS...

Again check the BIOS for power settings - your whole machine may be going to sleep...

The other machines shouldn't lose their connection to the internet. If they do, then there is some configuration issue with the server relying on the Dell client to be present or some unrelated configuration issue.

Hope that helps,
Cheers,
Tim.

Often, DSL modems remember the last MAC address it was connected to and that MAC address is recorded by your ISP to make sure you're not connecting more than one machine to that line (I'm assuming you're only paying for 1 IP). When you power cycle the modem it clears that MAC address cache. You may have a faulty DSL modem. Call you ISP and get a new one.

Or, try putting a cheap router in between the DSL modem and the Server. That would eliminate the small chance that another computers MAC address is being passed to the DSL modem.

I believe your server is set to sleep after a certain amount of time and when it does, it powers down many pieces of hardware including the network card.

Go to device manager in the System control panel. Find the network card and get its properties. Go to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to conserve power".
