Move apps from machine to machine?

By Rock Lobster ·
Is there any way to move applications from one win 98 machine to another win 98 machine? My client needs a DOS based tax application moved from one machine to another, but no longer has the installation CD. I have considered using Ghost, but will grab the entire HDD, not just a single application.

Thanks!

There is software out there that claims to be able to transport applications from PC to PC.

1 version is part of OnTracks System Suite.

However, since this is a DOS program, it 'SHOULD' work to just copy the shortcuts and program folder.

Unlike Windows 9X applications, DOS apps 'normally' did not place any special files into folders other than their own.

They did often add a .bat file to the root for starting the app, and may add lines to autoexec.bat
Usually just a path statement.

I've moved apps on Win98 from one machine to another by copying the app directory. Before you kill the original machine, open the app. Sometimes there are DLL files that you don't know are affiliated and you can copy them across. Generally, Win95/98apps are easily moved because they are relatively simple, but for insurance you might do a registry search and backup relevant branches to 'restore' to the new machine.

If you have or can get norton system works 2000 it has a thing to move files and apps to other computers. You can also pack all related files, dll's, exe's, etc. into your "briefcase" which was designed for transporting whatever to other devives.
