Move Exchange server to new server

    by jsfald ·

Our Domain Controller which also runs our Exchange server needs to be rebuilt. We have a server that was used for testing that we did a clean install of Windows 2000 on. I have found instructions on how to move the Domain Controller to as long as there is no Exchange/SQL server on it. I have also found instructions on how to move Exchange to new hardware as long as the new machine has the same name (we want the new machine to have a new name.)

I am trying to plan the migration to the new machine. I’m sure that this has been done before so I am looking for those instructions in an effort to save time. If there are no instructions out there then do you have any tips on how to do it, specifically on how to move the Exchange mail boxes to the new machine?

    Thanks for your help.

I suggest that you put in the new server.

Place the system in the domain.

Promote it to a DC, if neccessary.

      Place Exchange on the box.

Place the Exchange server in your organization.

MOVE the mailboxes from the old Exchange server to the new one.

When the data has been moved, stand down the old Exchange server.

Thank you BFilmFan. Could you fill in two more details for me. Will the clients recognize the new Exchange server automatically or will I have to reconfigure each client?
Is moving the mail boxes staight forward by using Exchange System Manager or is there another tool?

Follow the steps as BFilmfan describes.

After moving your mailboxes and public folders keep your old exchange server running for a week or two. Mail profiles on all clients will be updated automatically.

When thats done don’t shutdown your old Exchange server an remove it. First transfer a few roles to the new server. See:
