Move servers to another domain

By Tim Marshall - Houston ·
I have an Exchange 5.5 member server and a PDC in one domain that I would like to add to another domain. I'm sure the PDC will need to be reloaded but what about Exchange. Can I put it in a workgroup and then join the other domain and how will this affect Exchange 5.5? Thanks

Move servers to another domain

A member server can be moved to another domain just like a workstation - as you say, remove it from the domain by creating a "workgroup" membership instead, then add it to the new domain. As long as the server name isn't changed, I don't think Exchange will have any problems - it depends primarily on the home server and its own site members. Only thing I can think of is the permissions within Exchange for Site Admin. What you may need to do is give the local Administrator account on your member server permission as the Site Admin for Exchange and even set it up as the Exchange Service Admin account, so that when you leave the domain you will not lose the ability to administer the Exchange server. Then you can change the permissions again when you join the new domain to allow the new domain Admins to administer the site. Hope this helps!
