Move win2k terminal services licensing

By genesiswave ·
Our current config has a winnt4 domain with the licensing server on a win2k member server in the domain. We want to upgrade to 2000 Active directory and would need to move the licensing server to the domain controller. Does anyone know of a way todo this. I have checked the Microsoft site but have not found any information regarding this. Any input would be appreciated

You would have to do two different things, the first is to contact Microsoft (I know, i do not like to call them) and they should give you a new code for the W2K server. Once this installed, you can point the 4.0 servers over to the W2K server through the managment console.

Call MS Clearing house and tell them what you are doing. They will need to issue you new licenses for the new server (TS CALs are tied to a License server ID).

Install your new Active Directory DC's and install the Terminal Services Licensing Service. Activate the new server. Contact the Clearing house and give them the new DC Server ID. They can issue the new licenses.

You may have to add a license server discovery registry entry on your Terminal Server boxes. Don't forget to turn off and make manual the member server License server. Also, never have multiple License servers running since the others could be giving out temporaries when there are real licenses on the primary.

Good Luck.

Steve

We are already aware that we are probably going to need to contact Microsoft, that is not what we are looking for here, we are seeking an answer other than call Microsoft. Besides the current PDC can be upgraded to win2k and that is the path we aremost likely to take.
