Moved IDE drive from one PC to another and now won't boot

By bjwhiting ·
Hi All,
I have a 120GB WD IDE drive that was a second drive in an old P3 192MB RAM PC. It has XP SP2 home edition and still (dual) boots from the old PC fine. I got my hands on a Dell GX240 Optiplex, that while not the fastest will run circles around the old machine. I installed the drive and it successfully installed as I can see evrything on both partitions when I boot the system from the master drive. I changed the boot.ini file to match the way it was in the old machine, but when I select this OS from the dual boot menu I get a quick flash of a crash with something that I cannot read because it is on the screen for no more than a second before the machine reboots itself.

Anyone out there have ideas on how to diagnose and fix an issue like this?

Thanks a million in advance.

HAL

Just to add to what has been posted.

What you have run into is major differences in the Hardware Abstraction Layer or HAL. When the hardware is significantly different, Windows will not load because it is attempting to load drivers for hardware that is not there.

The repair install method in the link works most of the time.
