Moving an XP user to new hardware

By rbroder ·
I have read a lot of different posts concerning User Profiles, but I have yet to find one that explains step by step how to move an XP user's Profile to new hardware. One would think this would be easy: some utility to just pick up the users Profile in Documents and Settings and move it to a new machine... but no! As the Network Admin, there should be no security issue, except reapplying the user's own permissions to the new Profile on the new hardware. How about it?

At the file and settings transfer wizard? You find it in system tools, it will copy just about every thing you want to a location you pick. It will compress the the file and unpack it when you run it on the new computer. The user should log in first and run the wizard, it pull's my documents, favorites, and allot of other stuff. If you keep email on the exchange server then you wont have to worry about that. Unless they have archived stuff on their computer.

Moving user profiles

I just wrote a quick HOWTO on doing this in Vista. It is probably very similar in XP, since I don't believe any of the registry keys have changed.
You can read it here:
