By rloper ·
Has anyone moved an exchange 5.5 server running on windows 2000 member server from an NT 4 domain to an Active Directory domain?

This is the way i did it (4-5 times already).
- Establish a trust between the old and the new domain.
- Install a second exch srvr in the same site as your existing exch srvr.
- Once the second exch srvr runs change the service account to a new account on the W2k domain.
- When the 2 exch srvrs keep running move all the mailboxes to the new exch srvr using the 'move mailbox wizard'. Mail profiles are changed automaticly when users logon to their mailboxes.
- Users must close mailbox before you move them!!
- Make a replica of all public folders on the new exch srvr.
- Search MS Technet for KB article on 'How to remove the first server from a site'.
- Using this article, move the exch roles (routing calc srvr, offline address book srvr, etc) to the new exch srvr.
- Shutdown/disconnect the old exch srvr.

Don't make the mistake Imade the first time!!!
I forgot to change the service account to a new w2k account. When I removed the old domain/exch srvr Exchange crashed and could not start anymore because it could not find the service account.
Result: Complete reinstall and restore of exch data from backup.

Good luck.
