Moving Exchange (PDC) & combining 2 Exch

By rich.chrobak ·
One of our upcoming projects is to move an Exchange server that currently
resides on a PDC to a new machine that will be in the same domain, same
site, same organization, and hopefully the same data and users. If we
install Exchange on a new server, stop existing services on both servers,
and copy over the Exchange folders, will we have any problems with the SID?
I actually just did this a few days ago, but with a BDC. I am concerned
that accounts will have to be recreated, and from thetext of this message,
I can't tell.

In addition, we have two more Exchange servers with fewer users (about 15
each). One is in the same domain, the other isn't. How can we move the
data from these two servers (including Info Store and User accounts) to the
new Exchange server created above? Thank you.

I helped a friend do this recently. I would create another server in the same site. Make sure both servers see each other. Then move all of your user mailboxes over to the new server.

The nice thing is that you will not have to visit each computer and change client settings. Exchange/Outlook are smart enough to automatically make the change the next time the user starts Outlook.

Dear Sir,

You can find the exact procedure, how to move site, organization, merge and etc. in Exchange 5.5 SP2 CD.
I did it many times and it is work but you have to be very careful.

Best Regards. Sincerely,
Ron Farzan

Hi,

I have experienced large problem moving Exchange servers. I reinstalled NT4 and Exchange several times. Best way to do is explained in the TechNet. I containes step-by-step instructions what and how to do it. Last time I did it exacly by thissnstruction and it passed without any problem. You can find it in the TechNet Knowledge Base by Finding keywords "kbenv kbusage XADM exc4 exc5 exc55". So, Microsoft offers utility to move Exchange Server (it's provided on TechNet "Server Utilities" disk, but I never tried it.

Good Luck,

Mike

Install the new Exchange server and move all mailboxes to the new server. When this is done you don?t have to visit you clients because outlook detects where a client mailbox resides. This only works when you leave the old server running.

I had the same situation at my company. I left my all server active for about 3 weeks. After that period I deinstalled the exchange server software. When you take the old server offline at the beginning the outlook server detection doesn?t function

Good luck

Henk
