Moving existing NDS to new server

By bstansfield ·
I have an existing Netware 5 server (on an old HP server)I want to migrate all data and NDS to a new compaq server.I want to keep the name of the server and all properties of existing server the same and stay in same tree. Basically just want to change hardware and keep all nds in tact. Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

You can do this by using Upgrade Wizard (download from Novell).

It will guide you to perform the whole upgrade process.

One very important thing you need to do before you use the Upgrade Wizard (something that Novell fogets to tell anyone) is assign another user (other than Admin) full rights to the ROOT of the tree. If your migrating your master replica than this is a must. If it's a R/W or R/O I would still do it just to be on the safe side. I was burned by this lack of info and had to call Novell and the actually had to dial into my network and reset the admin rights.

There may be easier ways to move to the new server, but I suggest you use your disaster recovery plan. This is the perfect time to test the recovery of your data and the nds. The new server is likely just what you would buy if the hard drive and mother board burned out on the old server. It will probably cost you a couple of days time, but will be saving that amount of downtime in a real disaster situation. I've done it with NW4.1 and Arcserve, and there were some parts that were far from obvious beforehand.

If time is a compelling issue, I agree with Joe (answer5) that Servermagic is the simplest approach. If the new harware needs different drivers for the hard drive, be sure you have them copied to the C: partition before you copy the partitions to the new drive. Servermagic is the ONLY way to add/replace hard drives. It usually pays for itself during the first use. But if you can spare the time, I still stand by my first answer as the most useful option.

Servermagic for Netware from Powerquest offers a compelling software package that will allow you to copy, expand and shrink Netware partitions server to server.
