Moving Files from Server to Server

By draynes ·
I have thousands of files on one of my servers. Many of them have not been modified (or accessed) for years. I would like to move all of these old files (based on date last modified) to another server - keeping the same directory structure.

One possibility: Use Find to find all files older than a certain date, then use Winzip to create a zipfile and retain full paths, then unzip to other server.

Haven't tried it. I really need to retain the security info too.

You can map a drive to the other Server, Use Windows Explorer to sort by date, and drag and drop.

Too many files to move using this method. Also I need to keep the directory structure of folders and sub-folders.

There are a number of options depending on what your needs are. You can do the one time move like #1 suggested plus zip them up to save room or if you have something like ARCServe it has archiving abilities built-in. Also there are a number of freeware/shareware programs to archive data to move files automatically. Checkout download.com for some of them. PowerArchiver 2000. Its a good program.

The best way is to map a drive to the new server, go into DOS mode, then use scopy from the resource kit. I believe the command line is something like scopy *.* /a /s . This will move all of the directories and files to the new server. If the command line is wrong, use scopy /? to get the right switches.

Hope this helps.

Look in the Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit...and check out the Robocopy.exe program. Program will let you copy all of directory structure as well as the ACLs for each file/folder!

I've used it and it works quite well!
