Moving GroupWise Mailboxes

By khodges ·
Can you copy a users mailbox from on GroupWise system to another? In testing we are looking at ways to migrate from one server to a new server and keep all of our data the exact same as the old server. Can we install Groupwise in a test invironment and then copy a users mailbox to the new server to test the operability? Or even use it to migrate to the new server.

It's not so simple. A dos copy won't work.
Option 1.
Create a second POST OFFICE on the new server (a post office only needs a server part of the same tree and some disk space)
From NDS user porperties, move the user from OLD post office to NEW post office. Gwise will do the job for you.
Consider that you will need more space (up to the double)due to the fact that a mail copied to two persons, one belongong to old POA, and the other residing in New_POA, will be duplicated.
Once every useris moved, you can delete the old_POA and start moving gwia, nwasync, POA's nlm, etc, etc from one server to the other.
You then can copy the domain subdirectory from old server to new server and reconfigure your NDS path to domain database (wpdomain). The last change is the MTA's configuration, where you must change the path variable to point to the new domain path.

Hope it helps!!!

Ok, Another scenario. We are using the migration wizard but it doesn't migrate the SYS\System folder. So it doesn't get the NLMs or the config files for any of GroupWise
We are going from a 5.1 server with GroupWise installed and being used. To a 5.1 server with only 5.1 on it, nothing else. Basically we have a new server that we want to move GroupWise to. Anyone ever done this?

There are a couple of ways you can move from one server to another. All of them involve some work, but it will payoff. The first answer is one way that will work. Another way is to create a new post office system on the new server, new MTA and POA. Then, move the users from the old PO to the new PO on the new server. It's actually very easy to move users from one PO to another. I moved about 1000 users this way, from GW 4 to 5. The downside is it can be slow, taking 10 minutes to several hours to move one user. The upside of doing it this way, you can do it during business hours if you want, and the email system is available to all users during the process, (except when they are being moved). Novell has a number of good documents on movingusers. try this one:

Hope that helps.

As i looked, my answer is similar to the first, I think I would move the MTA to the new server first, then create the new POA, move the users, then delete GW from the old server.
