How many 4.11 servers do you have in your tree? Is the new NW5 server replacing the First machine in the tree, what I call King Server or NDS-1?

You could merge the new 5.0 server into the existing tree, and it will get NDS data from the master replica, you could use Novell's upgrade wizard which comes with NW5, or you could try the back door solution. In Nwconfig, you can back up NDS, and try to do a restore on the new server. This has worked for me 1 out of 3 times, and saves time, but it's not 100% sure.

Let me know about your number of servers, and exactly where the new NW5 machine is going to fit in. If it is going to become the King Server, the problem is much more difficult because you have to ensure the integrity of the REplicas and Partitions on both itself, and the other servers in the tree. If it's just a server replacement, ( not nds-1 ) then its much simpler.

Unless you've invested a lot of time in the new server and transferred data to it, I would use NWCONFIG to remove NDS from the new server, then install NDS again from NWCONFIG. When you do, you will have the opportunity to install the new server into the current tree. NDS is made for this and it works very well.

Make sure your 4.11 server is patched to the latest service packs before installing the new server into the tree.

When the new server is in the tree, use NDS Manager to make the new server the one that contains the master replica, and then when you are ready, you can remvoe the old server from the tree.

I would do an in-place upgrade with the Novell Accelerated Upgrade wizard.
