    moving printers between NT4 servers

    We have a network with approx 2000 users & 80 servers – a large no of printers are distributed over these servers & subnets.

    I want to copy the printers from one server, about 30, onto another server. I ‘ve tried to copy two registry files,

    hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\printprinters

    &

    hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\printmonitors\lprports\ports

    When i tried this all the ip/port details copied over but only 2 icons copied into the printers folder: none of the other icons appeared.

    All the printers are HP laserjets, over 90% are internal jet direct, a few others are external jet direct and a few are on terminal servers.

    There are no odd permissions set on the printers or anything obvious different between the two that copied & those that didn’t

    Any ideas?

      PrintMig from the NT Resource Kit should do the trick.
      Incidently, I think doing via the reg. requires another key (I think it’s a “share” key) I’ll see if I can find it.
      However, from what the Documentation sez, PrintMig should do most of the work for you.

      PrintMig from the resource kit is the way to go.
      It just saved me from having to reinstall 60 printers.
      Just follow the instructions for Source and Target locations. If the new server is on the network you can just save the files to it.
      This program takes a while to run so be patient. The 60 printers took about 20 minutes.
      The printMig will move all the printers and the drivers too.
