Moving Roaming Profile Folders

by neville . Updated 21 years, 11 months ago

Im in a corner and am hoping that someone can help. I am moving user roaming profile Folders from one server to another but am encountering locked files especially the ntuser file. I have tried everything I can think of but with no luck. All the users I am attempting to move ARE logged off and in fact some have not been on shift for 3 days. I have also rebooted the DC and the machine on which the Profiles Folders currently reside.

What I want to do is very very simple but something stupid is driving me around the bend.

I want to move the roaming profiles from machine A to machine B. While the user is logged off I go to the profiles folder on machine A and copy the user folder //machineA/profiles/JoeSoap to a Profiles folder created on machine B. Ah but wait. First I seize ownership and go as far as changing the security to Everyone, Full control. Ok now in my opinion its ready to be copied even by “Anybody”. On the folder CTRL-C, Browse the network to machine \\machineB\profiles and Ctrl -V and BAM a big “p1ss off” notification in my eye “Can not copy NT user. Access Denied. The Source file may be in use.” So now what can I say. How the hell can the file be in use when the user has not been at work for three days. Why access Denied when every man and his dog has been given full control on the folder? Right so now I, clutch at straws and go to AD Admin tools and I trash user JoeSoap’s roaming profile. Still no go. So what do I do now. I start rebooting servers and guess what? I still have one big “p1ss Off” notification in my eye.

Its not like the first time I have done this and although I had a couple of folders with locked files in them the last 5 times. I found if you leave them alone long enough the lock goes away peacefully and I move it, but this time round half the folders just wont move or copy. Man, security propagation cant take 3 days or am I doing something embarrassingly stupid. Maybe I must go home and sleep on it or alternately, drink like there’s no tomorrow.
