Moving up the corporate ladder

By boyle_heights ·
Next month I will finally complete by BS in Electrical Engineering. I could not afford to continue at the time, was not enjoying what I was studying, and was doing bad in school. Since I left school I have tried to find jobs that I found interesting. I had a QA internship (1 yr) at a major company, a switch database engineer job at a telecomm (1 yr), test engineer (1.5 years) job at an IT test lab, and my current QA Analyst (2 yrs) job. Testing software is something that I enjoy but would like to move up in responsibility. Being a lead and a project manager are things I strive for. However I am not sure how to proceed. Recently I have looked into the different QA certifications but I am not sure how well those are received. What steps would you recommend? My current job does not offer the opportunity to move up as there is a very low turnover rate and few if any openings.

Promotion opportunities

Although your degree is better suited for an engineering position, like the one you had at the telecomm company, it sounds like you ar more interested in Q/A. I'm not sure what kind of openings there are, but why don't you see if you can find a position doing Q/A for a telecommunications firm? On the surface, that type of position would take advantage of your education and your work experience, and would offer greater responsibility. Otherwise, you should apply for Q/A team leader positions. Dice.com is a good source for technical jobs, but networking is the best way to find unadvertised positions.

Good luck.
