MS Outlook XP - Personal Folder

By gaklim ·
The size of my personal folder keep growing to close to 800MB. I have tried to delete as much unwanted mail and clear the empty folder but its size did not reduce. Why is that so?

I have even tried to delete all the mails but the size is still as big. When I try to import this personal folder file to a new profile, it is empty. Why is it empty when the file size is so big?

You need to compact the file in order for the file size to decrease.
1. Click start, settings, control panel.
2. Double click the mail icon.
3. Click on data files and highlight the one you want to compress and click settings.
4. Click on compact now.

This may take a while depending on how much it needs to compress.

This is a copy and paste from Help in Outlook 2003. I hope it's the same for XP:

Reduce the size of a data file

If you delete items from a data file, the size of the file will not change unless you compact the file. Compacting the file might take several minutes.

On the File menu, click Data File Management.
Click the data file that you want to compact, and then click Settings.
Click Compact Now.
Note: When you compact a .pst file, you do not have to exit Microsoft Outlook.

Good luck!
