MS Win 2K Vs. Novell 3x - please comment

By it_jp ·
Hi all !

I work for a small Company, about 100 employees. Currently, our network has a primary domain on Novell 3x. Our e-mail is handled by GroupWise 4.1a. We're facing a small dilemma, should we upgrade to the current versions of novell/groupwise or to Windows 2000/exchange 2000?

Our top concerns are security and performance. For the past six years, our network/system has never been down. And we've never had a virus issue either. We firmly believe that by switching to Windows we'll make ourselves vulnerable.

I'd like to know if there is anyone who's gone through the same situation before?

Any non-microsoft/novell hating suggestions?

Please comment !

Thank you.

When it comes to security, Mandrake Linux, tops it. There is always a bug on MS. I went to their site to download SP3 for Win2000pro, and it comes with W32BDWorm virus. I don't hate MS, just wondering how was it able to be penatrated by this virus. That's all.

Why aren't you worried about training and maintenance? A new system requires training the techs who will maintain it and the users who will use it. You also will have to migrate your archives to the new system. If it hasn't been down in six years, why mess with it? If anything, you might upgrade your NetWare and Groupwise, if they have features you want or need. Otherwise, why go looking for trouble?

I think the advice of sticking with something you know is sound. For us, Netware 5.1 has proven to be as stable as 3.1x was.

Keep in mind that an upgrade to any newer version of netware and groupwise might also entail a hardware upgrade as well (which will probably compound the performance gain from the new software). Other benefits:

* NDS -- far superior to the 3.12 bindery, and more flexible than NT domains or AD. Manage your users by divisions in your organization, etc.

* Pure IP-- Netware 5.1 & 6 allow your clients to use Ip to communicate with the server. Speed gains depend on environment, of course, but can be significant.

* NSS file system -- more efficient disk usage, faster volume mounts.

* GUi management at the console, if your into that sort of thing (I don't load it, others swear by it)

If you are only using the groupwise for e-mail (not shared schedules or workflow), you might consider replacing it with Novell's NetMail. It's a standards based inter/intranet e-mail server that has support of POP3, IMAP, and WebMail, as well as built-in anti-virus.
