When checking out my PC recently I noticed the McAfee files VSHWIN.exe and WEBSCANX.exe load more than once on my computer. I know that this is probably a simple request for some really great technician out there but this one cannot seem to get ridof the duplications. When Igo into selective startup and remove them they still return.

Hi, First I would check the Autoexec.bat file in the root of C (right click on the file and choose edit) to see if there are more than one load commands in there. If that doesn't help, then I would uninstall the McAfee and re-install. If that still doesn't solve your problem, I would contact support at McAfee to see if they have a solution to this situation. Best wishes.

I think that the rating unacceptable does not really fit. No it did not help me but I think that the response was one of accurate troubleshooting. Sorry, but I have reinstalled the product (twice)and there is nothing in the AUtoexec file that refersto that. Thanks for trying. McAfee says that it is the way Windows is loading it but Windows has been reinstalled as well.

It may be a registry entry causing it. You can run regedit, browse to the settings and see if there is a key that would cause those files to be loaded twice. A good site for learning how to navigate and work in the registry is <http://www.winguides.com/registry/>

I hope that may help.

Could not navigate through the registry. SO while this may have worked, I could not make it work.

Open up Regedit and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
This is where the run at startup programs as listed (the ones you see in MSCONFIG). If you see the same Mcafee files in here twice, then just delete the duplicates.
Also, there could be subfolders under Run. Check it out.
Plus, there could be a Run- folder on the same level as Run (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-). Programs could be in this folder that also autostart (I think!).

hope this helps

McAfee VirusScan calls itself more than once on purpose (doing different things each time.) The behaviour you are seeing is "normal" for McAfee. Don't worry about it. By removing the duplicate entries, they will return. It's how it works. Sorry.

I agree that the program does multiple things at different time but I should NOT load the same executable multiple times. It never did it before And yes I need to worry about it as those multiple entries are eating up system resources whichare hindering other work that I need to be doing.

Here's a quickie cure: uninstall the program. Then go into MSCONFIG and make sure none of the options are listed after a reboot. Then just reinstall the program. The "default" correct behavior should be restored.

Done that already. Still loads more than once.
