msconfig.exe's StartUp program chaos

By michtif-maker ·
So, I know that I can uncheck all the programs that I don't want to run during startup by clearing the boxes in msconfig's startup tab. I'm just thinking that it is a pretty shabby way of managing software! There must be a more efficient method ofconfiguration that is meant to do that, right? It just seems to me that with the amount of dollars that microsoft gets with each new version of windows, one would think they would be able to create a more sensible method. As it is, even when I do use that method to reduce the load on my system, a lot of the time the software (or windows) just adds it back again. NOW I've got TWO of the lines that I didn't want!

Anyone? (sorry if this seems hostile...I'm a frustrated once-was-programmer - pre-PC and as far back as punch cards and teletype's - and it just seems like they've lost themselves in their own code) I sooo miss good old linear logic!

You are right! Msconfig sometimes ignores it when you uncheck a box for that stuff. I hate that too. One way to remove the offending programs is to look for it in windows\start\startup and remove them there. Another way is to right-click the icon onthe taskbar to get at the settings for that program. Try these methods, if you haven't already.

Also, you might try some helper apps.
One I've used is Windows Administrator.
It's made by RADEK and it's free to download and use.

First thing is first, dont blame Microsoft. What you are seeing here is the programs forcing itself back into the startup, thats the way most are designed, its a fight to see you can get loaded first. I suggest removing them from the registry.

Well...I guess I knew all that but - try and stop me - I'm gonna blame Microsoft anyway! :-P

Don't worry 'bout them...I'm pretty sure they have WIDE shoulders to carry the burden!

Sorry, couldn't think of anyone else to blame and we know it couldn't be MY fault!
Take it easy!

I have a FULL Product program "Custom Start Up" that will probably provide your answer. Techrepublic does not provide for "attached files". I can send you this program if you give me your email address.

Pls respond to alan.robinson@rcss.uk.com orvia tech republic.

Thanks

Alan
