MSDOS in WIndows 2000

By Samiangel ·
I have a problem and Im not sure how to resolve it. In our office we had in the past a DOS Program that we used for Permit Tracking, recently we installed new Computers with Win2000. How can I get the old DOS Program to work in Win2000, or is it notpossible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Create a batch file to start the DOS program and make the batch file your link.
I.e.
use the COMMAND prompt from start programs command
c:
cd\
md batch
cd batch
edit mydosprogram.bat
c: (or drive letter of program)
cd\program\directory
DOSprogram
alt-f x save(yes)
Right click on desktop screen
new
program
browse to c:\batch
select the batch file you created.

You don't say what requirements the DOS program has in terms of memory or whatever, but here are some general guidelines.
1. Set the autoexec.nt and config.nt files to whatever setting the DOS program (i.e. buffer, files, himem, etc.)
2. Create a PIF file for your program. You do this by creating a desktop icon for a DOS window. You can use command.exe, but you might try cmd.exe instead.
3. Go to the properties of this window. Here you will change the program from cmd.exe to you program, set the DOS memory, screen size, etc.
4. To print in DOS, you will need to go to each PC, or set up a batch file (perhaps login) and use the NET USE command to specify your LPT ports. Run NET USE /? for details.
I'm running my whole company on a DOS program written in the mid eighties. It took some work, but it will run.
Good Luck!
