    Locked

    by george ·

    Hi all,
when i boot my PC i get a message (during setup)as follows:
    “Invalid setting in MSDOS.SYS ORIG-DIAG-BOOT=0”.
Does anyone know what it is and how to fix it?Note that my PC runs windows 98SE and it boots normally, even though the above appears while booting.

MSDOS.SYS is one of 3 required dos files, the others are command.com and io.sys. It is hidden on the root of your C: drive. Your current copy may be dammaged. Probably the easist thing to do is to go to your rescue disk and copy it from there to your C: drivereplacing the current copy. If you don’t have a rescue disk, go to the 98 CD and copy it from that onto your C: drive.

Open msdos.sys with Notepad. It’s a hidden, read only file so you will need to change it’s attributes. Under [Options] look for Bootxxx=0 and change it to Bootxxx=1.

      You could follow these steps,

      Change MSDOS.SYS attribute
      attrib c:\msdos.sys -s -h -r

      Run DOS editor,
      edit msdos.sys

Find the line containing ORIG-DIAG-BOOT, and just delete the line. Save MSDOS.SYS.

      Re-set attribute of MSDOS.SYS atttrib msdos.sys +s +h +r

      Hope it helps.

If your MSDOS.SYS file is damaged, you can replace it like this: (1)Select shut down in windows, but restart to DOS Prompt; (2) From the C:\> prompt type CD C:\Windows (3) Then type CD Command (4) Now type SYS C: . Over-write the MSDOS.SYS file, then type Exit at the C:\> Prompt and restart Windows. Doing it this way will replace the MSDOS.SYS file if it is corrupted and not hurt anything if it isn’t.
      Hope this helps, Don 🙂
