Microsoft did remove JAVA VM from XP SP1A. Which, is the only version of the service pack that you can download from Microsoft.

The version of JAVA VM that was part of SP1 has been replaced with a newer version to correct a security issue.

My first recommendation is that you switch to Sun' JAVA.
You can download it from www.java.com

As part of a settlement, Microsoft is dropping ALL support for JAVA.
Microsoft hopes to move web developers away from JAVA and to DOT-NET technologies.

That said, you can (the last time I tried) you can still download JAVA Virtual Machine from Microsoft from either Window Update (for a single machine) or Windows Update Catalog (to save for use on multiple PCs).

The link for the Update Catalog is:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/

Remove any spaces from the pasted link.

As of 4/2 Microsoft and Sun came to an agreement
So it looks like you will be able to stick with MSJava
