MSN Messenger won't launch in Win98

By mmorley ·
I've installed MSN Messenger 4.5 on a Win98 machine. I get a program entry on the Start menu but no icon in the lower right corner on my machine, nor will it start automatically when I restart my machine. I do get an icon in Internet Explorer 6.When I try to launch MSN Messenger from either the Start Menu or from inside IE, I hear my open.wav, but the program does not open, and it does not show up in the close program boxwhen I do a Ctl-Alt-Del. When I unistall it, I get a message that I must close it first, but I have no way to do that. If I continue with the uninstall, it unistalls. I have also tried MSN Messenger 3.0. I get the same results. Yahoo Messenger will install and work properly, but my colleagues use MSN Messenger.
Does any one have any suggestions?

I need to know how to get this program to launch, or what may be keeping it from launching.

use
windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Then, click on the components "installed";
then click on MSN messenger and re-install it from this site.

If it does not fix it; and you have other problems; then you should use the same method and re-install all the IE components.

MSN messenger 4.5 has tried to connect all the elements together; I suggest you to uninstall it and use a lower version which runs smoothly and less pain.

I would have thought this should work. I reinstalled MSN Messenger over top of its self from the Windows Update site. Did not help. I uninstalled MSN Messenger and reinstalled it again from the update site. Still did not work. I uninstalled MSN Messenger and Internet Explorer 6 which reverted me back to IE5, then reinstalled MSN Messenger. Still did not work. I put in the service pack for IE5 and tried it again. Did not work. I uninstalled MSN Messenger, and reinstalled it from the update site. Did not work. I upgraded IE to 5.5 and tried it. Did not work. I uninstalled MSN Messenger and reinstalled it again from the update site. Did not work. I downloaded and installed Yahoo Messenger and it worked as it should unfortunately that does not solve my problem. I still can not communicate with my peers on MSN Messenger. I have not been able to find an older copy of MSN Messenger to download and try.

to remove it from starting so you can uninstall it find the .exe file that starts it and delete it
msmsgs.exe is the exact exe then delete it and then uninstall it. Then try a full reinstall. I would reinstall the IE and then the Messenger.

I have already done this in my previous attempts. I've deleted files and directories. I've given up until I get around to reformating the machine again. I the mean time I'll live with Email and phone calls. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
