It's free, and it ought to have no problems being compatible with the ancient Office 97.

Not to bash open office, but since Oracle took over, I hear- like most hear alot of things, but the Java it is based on, may become, not so free anymore.

OpenOffice developpers, have also began developping LibreOffice...

Ironically, both LibreOffice and OpenOffice are just about at the same "version number"... Just tossing it out there, as an alternative, should Oracle truly teerminate the Sun good faith/standing with the whole open source usage of Java...

Either way, I don't think any changes would affect backwards compatibility with something as outdated and static as Office 97.
