msoobe.exe application error

By Maydaynh ·
Hi, sure hope you can help me out.

On starting the computer (Dell with XP Home and 512 RAM) get "msoobe.exe application error. Instructions at.......memory at.... could not be read." I can then get into the computer seemingly OK. However...

When I go into aol and try to get on the internet, also get a memory error and am closed out of aol. If I go on to aol and then use Internet Explorer, I can access the www.

Any ideas what might be going on/how I can fix this annoyance??

Help!

well, i can tell you that msoobe is microsoft out of box experience. so it sounds like dell is running to setup a new pc. and it never finished.
have you tried starting it in safe mode, with and without networking (tap the f8 key during black screen reboot to see these boot options). perhaps spyware or malware or messed up/old aol software is the problem maybe. if it behaves in safemode with networking i'd do scandisk and do all the windows updates and update the aol software. if it only behaves in safe mode w/o networking i'd check for spyware with ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com
i'd also look this up on the dell website and the support.microsoft.com website. don't even bother with the aol website beyond downloading a new version maybe. no meaningful tech support there...
perhaps even just getting the setup to complete

perhaps an old restore point has been used. have you used msconfig to see if you can just locate and remove the msoobe thing from running at startup?
