MSWord XP Styles

On several occasions, when I’ve tried to change the current style of a paragraph into a different style by using either the style drop-down list or Format|Styles & Formatting, nothing happens – the style does not change. Can anyone out there tell mewhy this happens? Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
