MTU size in WIN 2000 prof & server

By tjm101 ·
How do we set MTU size in windows 2000 server & prof?

We need to do this to test our software which adds data to the packet and makes it larger than aloud.

I used Internet Turbo 2001 5.1
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10062-100-5251434.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-1.5251434

for my w2k pro pc's, I didn't test it on w2k server though, should be no problem.

Leopold

1. Do not change your MTU. MTU for Ethernet is 1500 Bytes, everywhere.

2. If your application passes data to TCP then TCP will not pass data to the IP stack that is larger than the MSS (Maximum Segment Size) which is lower than the MTU. If yourapplication is passing data to UDP, UDP will pass the data to the IP stack and they IP stack will fragment your packets to accomodate the MTU as long as you don't set the DF (Don't Fragment) field.

Unless you're writing your own layer 3 protocol,or adding a header in between the layer 2 and 3 header, then all of this is handled for you. If you have more specifics or need more info please let me know.

Guru,

We are using IPSec and writing our own code which puts a header on the packet.

This is for testing on a external device only. We realize that we can't tell all our customers to change there MTU.

Your last paragraph was helpful, butnot the solution.

I hope this additional info willhelp you help us.
