The situation is thus: I just got a cable modem (@home) and popped a second NIC into my server system. The system is a Dell PII 450 with 380something MB of RAM running Windows 2000 Server. The two NIC’s are a 3com905b 10/100 card and a 3com 900B 10baseT card. The 10/100 is plugged into my switch and sports a static IP for the internal network (this box also is my Domain Controller). The 10baseT NIC is plugged into the cable modem, and has a static external IP.
Now here’s the problem: The10/100 NIC runs fine all the time. The new NIC, however, drops the internet connection randomly approximately every 7-20 minutes. Once the connection is dropped, I cannot ping my gateway or receive anything over the NIC. If I disable and renable the NIC, it’ll run fine for another 7-20 min.
I’m running 2000 Server’s Software Router w/ NAT (NOT ICS), but the problem occurs even when routing is not enabled. I’ve also reinstalled the OS, gotten the latest NIC drivers, put in 2 new 10baseT nics, all with the same result. I’ve tried SP1, still no effect.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as I am sick of disabling and reenabling my NIC!!!! 🙂
