Multiple file renaming in Win 98

by thingnumber1 . Updated 24 years, 3 months ago

Hi All
I sure hope there is an easy solution to this. I am a photographer and am outsourcing my scanning.
The images come with a generic name, ie; ROLL1DX-1.TIF. The portion before the hyphen is geared to the roll as it was scanned. If I have several rolls on the same cd they would be ROLL2DX, ROLL3DX etc. The portion after the hyphen is the negative number as it apperas on the film strip.
I need to rename just the first portion, before the hyphen to my roll id. Ie; ROLL1DX-1.tiff would become 6079-1.tif.

Heres my problem. I need to rename an entire roll quickly. I cant seem to make explorer do this. It used to be easy in DOS or win3. I have tried opening a DOS window and using the ren command, but since I am using long directory commands I get the “invalid direcory or filename” error.

I know I can make a new short named directory and then copy the renamed files to theire home.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanx,
Sam
