    Multiple IDE drives

On a system that has 2 internal CD’s, a zip drive an (of course) a hard drive, can one add an additional IDE drive? This would equal 3 ide drives on one channel and 2 on another.

IDE only allows up to two disk drives in a series,to accomplish the set up you have stated you would have to use an EIDE,which allows up to four disk drives to be installed, two each on two IDE cables.

Standard IDE/EIDE only allows you to have 2 devices per controller. With a vast majority of computers having 2 controllers, you max out at 4 IDE devices. You can however, get seperate controllers now that have 4 channels, which can still have 2 devices each, so you can get 8 IDE devices. The controllers don’t really cost all that much, usually less than 100 dollars. This would be your only reasonable solution, short of changing to SCSI devices. Hope this helps.

You can’t have any more than 4 IDE devices as standard, as has already been stated. The obvious choice would be to buy a SCSI device – these days they are virtually plug and play! You would have to buy a SCSI card, but once installed you can have a maximum of eight devices off the one card (combination of backup devices, hard drives, cd/cdr/cdrw and scanners). Worth considering I think.

Another IDE drive can not be added to the current controllers. A third party controller can be purchased and used in a expansion slot. Since most hard drives are going to an ultra66 controller may I recommend getting one of those cards.

If the 5th IDE device will be a HDD, have you considered purchasing one large enough to replace your existing hard disk?

With only 4 IDE devices you won’t need to buy an expensive SCSI drive and adapter or use third party controllers.

      Sometimes simpler is better.
