Multiple IP addresses on same NIC

By jlbpotter ·
What would be an instance where you would need multiple IP addresses on the same NIC card? I understand the concept of multiple NICs with different IP addresses, but I am unsure of the use of multiple IP addresses on the same NIC.

If you want to have control of different requests to the same host. I.E. you have a Web server with two different sites you can assign IP address to one site and the other IP address to the other.

Any request can be dealt with according to the IPaddress it was made to instead of what kind of request you get.

jlbpotter,

A common use of multiple IP addresses on a single NIC is running multiple websites on a single server. The server/webserver software would be configured to respond to requests to a given IP address with pages for a particular website/"instance". This configuration is much easier than using webpage headers and a single IP address.

Hope this helps
